Kurfürst Salentin Grammar School takes a stand against racism

On Wednesday 3 June 2026, “Wir gegen Rassismus” was a guest at the Kurfürst Salentin Grammar School in Andernach. All year 8 classes spent two lessons each on the subject of racism and took a stand against discrimination and xenophobia.

At the invitation of history teacher Martina Pott, pastoral officer Christopher Hoffmann from the Diocese of Trier’s “Wir gegen Rassismus” initiative came to visit. Since 2017 the initiative has been campaigning for moral courage through a variety of activities in schools, churches and social networks — this was already its fifth visit to the KSG. Together with the pupils, he worked out an understanding of what racism is and how it shows itself in our society.

Particularly striking was the account given by a second guest, Mr Abdul-Monem Albatran from Syria. His story of fleeing his home country and his first experiences in Germany was not only moving, but also a powerful example of why tolerance and openness matter so much.
